England prop Andrew Sheridan has been ruled out of the second test against New Zealand in Christchurch on Saturday with a cut under his eye, team management said on Monday.

Sheridan, sin-binned in the 32nd minute of his side's 37-20 loss to the All Blacks at Eden Park on Saturday, was substituted in the 62nd minute after he was struck by the boot of team mate Lee Mears following a collapsed scrum.

He required 12 stitches to close the wound.

"I'm obviously very disappointed to get the news but I've got to follow the medical advice I've received," Sheridan said in a Rugby Football Union statement. "The laceration should be fully healed in a fortnight."

Sheridan will remain with the squad in New Zealand, though Newcastle prop David Wilson has been called up from the United States where he is with the England Saxons team playing in the Churchill Cup tournament.
