Those night owls who saw Tonga play the United States in a fast-flowing, non-kicking World Cup qualifying game will have recognised two familiar Sydney faces.

The United States were captained from five-eighth by the former smart young Gordon back Mike Hercus, while Tonga's five-eighth was the powerful former West Harbour winger Pierre Hola (pictured), who now plays professionally in Japan. Hercus played a typically elusive, constructive game and made a lovely break for the Eagles' second try, as well as kicking a goal and a penalty. But Hola had the last laugh with two conversions and two penalties in Tonga's 25-15 win at Stade de la Mosson in Montpellier.
