CHRIS LATHAM'S Wallabies career may be over and he will be stuck on 99 Queensland Reds appearances after damaging his shoulder against the Crusaders on Saturday night.

Latham will have scans on his shoulder today, but there are fears he has ruptured his pectoral muscle, which could sideline him for at least three months.

Latham lasted 13 minutes of his return game from injury before he was injured in a tackle. The Reds fullback tried to continue, but was in considerable pain and unable to pass the ball.

He was hopeful his farewell Super 14 match would be against the Waratahs in Brisbane on Saturday night, where he would have also celebrated his 100th Super rugby appearance for the Reds. However, there is no hope of that occurring, with Reds coach Phil Mooney yesterday confirming that Latham would not be playing against NSW - the province he began his first-class career with in 1997.

This leaves Latham, who will play overseas next season, in the frustrating position of finishing with the Reds one short of a century of caps.

"That's the end of one of the greatest careers in the Queensland jersey," Mooney said yesterday. "Unfortunately, not everyone gets the fairytale send-off. What he's done for Queensland over an extended period of time puts him up there amongst the greatest ever to wear the Red jersey."

Latham, 32, was expected to continue playing with the Wallabies this season, but that is now in serious doubt. It will all hinge on the results of today's scan.

There is also uncertainty whether winger Digby Ioane will play against the Waratahs, after he was yesterday cited by the Sanzar judiciary for a dangerous tackle. Ioane was yellow-carded for the offence, and will appear before the judiciary in Brisbane tonight.

While the Brisbane match will be the farewell Reds appearance for flanker David Croft, who is retiring, and hooker Stephen Moore, who is moving to the Brumbies, there is a slight chance Wallabies Hugh McMeniman and Sam Cordingley will appear on the Queensland bench.

Wallabies prop Rodney Blake will be available after serving a one-week suspension for a dangerous tackle.
