The Super 14's highest-profile international recruit has almost certainly played his last game in the competition after suffering a suspected season-ending injury on Saturday night.

French World Cup star Frederic Michalak lasted just nine minutes of the Sharks' 25-10 loss to the NSW Waratahs at the Sydney Football Stadium before hyper-extending his left knee after chasing down a kick.

Sharks coach Dick Muir immediately sent him for scans to confirm he tore an anterior cruciate ligament, meaning at least six months on the sidelines.

Muir was resigned to Michalak, a 50-Test stalwart for Les Bleus, having played his last game for the Durban-based franchise.

The 25-year-old's contract with the Sharks expires in June.

"He was going to stick around to play Currie Cup before returning for the French end-of-the-year tour, if he was selected," Muir said.

"He's grown to be one of us and he's really enjoyed it at the Sharks, and we've enjoyed having him and he's added a lot of value to our squad.

"So it will be very sad to see if it is the end of the road for him."
